Where to play Unravel 2, what local co-op looks like on each version, and what not to expect online.

Unravel 2 from Coldwood Interactive and Electronic Arts shipped as a cross-platform puzzle-platform adventure for home consoles and PC, with a later Nintendo Switch release for portable play. Every version shares the same core fantasy: Red and Blue Yarny, lasso and tether puzzles, Spark guidance, shadow threats, seven campaign chapters, a lighthouse hub, and about twenty optional bonus challenges. This page compares platforms honestly — including the fact that co-op is local same-screen, not a built-in online multiplayer mode.

What is the same everywhere

  • Campaign chapters: Foreign Shore through At the Rapids.
  • Solo dual control or local co-op with two Yarnys.
  • Lasso, tether, and split-character puzzle design.
  • Lighthouse hub and optional bonus challenge rooms unlocked through progress.
  • No native online co-op playlist or competitive netcode feature set.
  • Story and cast identical: Spark, children, shadows, yarn duo bond.

If a store page or friend promises “online yarn raids,” treat that as a misunderstanding. This fan wiki will not invent those features. For story and systems detail, see Story and Gameplay.

PC

Storefronts and setup

On PC, Unravel 2 is commonly available through the EA App ecosystem and Steam, depending on region and current storefront listings. Check the Get page for purchase pointers maintained by this fan site. PC is an excellent choice for players who already own two controllers and a couch — or a desk wide enough for two people to share a screen without elbow wars.

Controls and co-op notes

Local co-op works with two controllers. Solo players can dual-control both Yarnys without needing a second pad. Keyboard setups vary by preference, but swing timing generally feels best on a gamepad because analog intent maps cleanly to movement and lasso rhythm. If you play solo, practice parking one Yarny safely before every swap — PC convenience does not remove tether physics.

Remote play caveats

Some PC players stream a second seat to a friend using host tools such as Steam Remote Play Together. That can approximate distance co-op, but it is a streaming workaround, not a first-party online mode designed by Coldwood for matchmaking. Latency can punish precise swing releases. If your friendship depends on calm puzzles, same-couch play remains the intended experience.

PlayStation

Release family

Unravel 2 launched on PlayStation 4 as part of the 2018 multi-platform release. On compatible PlayStation 5 systems, the PS4 version may be playable via backward compatibility, subject to Sony’s current compatibility rules for your region and account. Always verify the store listing for your console generation before buying a second copy you do not need.

Living room co-op

PlayStation shines for local co-op: two DualShock or DualSense controllers, one shared screen, clear audio for callouts. The campaign’s quieter storytelling benefits from a focused living-room session. Bonus lighthouse rooms are easier to retry when nobody is fighting portable handheld fatigue.

Do not expect a separate online co-op lobby inside the game. Invite a friend over, or play solo with dual control if the second pad is missing.

Xbox

Xbox One and Series compatibility

Xbox One received Unravel 2 in the original wave. Xbox Series X|S players typically rely on backward compatibility where Microsoft makes the title available on newer hardware. As with any older EA Originals release, confirm Smart Delivery / compatibility details on the Microsoft store page for your account rather than assuming every SKU behaves identically forever.

Controller comfort

Xbox controllers are a natural fit for lasso timing and coordinated co-op. Same-screen rules apply: one Yarny per player, shared camera, shared consequences when the tether yanks someone off a factory ledge. Solo dual control remains fully valid if you are hunting chapters or challenges alone.

Nintendo Switch

Portable yarn adventures

The Nintendo Switch version arrived after the initial 2018 launch, bringing Unravel 2 to handheld and hybrid play. It is the best pick if you want lighthouse challenges on a train, or split Joy-Con co-op on a couch without a second full-size controller. Performance and visual fidelity can differ from high-end PC or current-gen TV installs, but the puzzle design and campaign structure remain the same seven chapters and bonus-room fantasy.

Joy-Con co-op tips

Joy-Con split play is charming and slightly fiddly. Agree on grip comfort before long sessions. If swing precision suffers, try a Pro Controller for the player who leads most aerial chains, or dock the Switch for a TV session with fuller controllers. Portable mode is wonderful for story chapters; some players prefer docked mode for the hardest bonus rooms.

Choosing a version

Choose PC if…

You want storefront flexibility, easy access to two USB or wireless pads, and optional streaming experiments knowing they are unofficial workarounds. PC also suits players who already live in EA App or Steam libraries.

Choose PlayStation or Xbox if…

Your household already gathers on that living-room console. Unravel 2’s emotional campaign feels at home on a shared TV with snacks and patience. Backward compatibility can save money if you own the previous generation disc or digital license.

Choose Switch if…

Portability or easy Joy-Con guest co-op matters more than maximum fidelity. It is also a strong “second copy” platform for travel if you already finished the game on another system and simply want the yarn duo in your bag.

Online multiplayer: clear answer

Unravel 2 does not include built-in online multiplayer as a core designed mode. Co-op is local and same-screen. This is not a missing patch on one platform only — it is the game’s social design across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Fan communities sometimes share streaming tips; those tips do not rewrite the product into an online service game.

If you came here hoping for netplay matchmaking, redirect that energy into local nights, solo mastery, or the lighthouse’s roughly twenty challenges. The co-op guide and challenges guide will help more than any fake server browser.

Save progress, bonuses, and expectations

Progress through chapters unlocks lighthouse challenge batches after mid-campaign clears (chapters two through six are the important unlock windows). Customization rewards come from optional rooms, not from platform-exclusive online seasons. Do not expect platform-unique story DLC on this fan site’s fact sheet — we document the shipped campaign and bonus challenges only.
